Financial products analytics and sales intern

June - August 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

It was honestly a career development internship, a way to see if you like Bloomberg and would want to work there full-time. I did a lot to support the teams I was on at Bloomberg, but networking and skill development was a huge part of it. They want you to get a taste of Bloomberg life and the internship specifically is a look into what the standard first two years at the company looks like. All levels of management were super accessible and loved meeting with interns. They gave us a lot of responsibility and I was able to speak to clients and present to high level management with group projects. They also gave plenty of feedback. I could tell even in the virtual environment that the company culture is incredible.

What I wish was different

It was supposed to be in NYC at the Bloomberg office, but it was virtual because of COVID-19. If it was in person, we would have had really cool workplace experiences but they did an incredible job at making the virtual experience really valuable, enjoyable, and interactive.

Advice

If you take part in this internship, make sure to stay on top of time management!! Take advantage of your team members and mentors the best you can and NETWORK!! The company culture is incredible and you can learn a lot by having a quick call with someone. No person is too high up to try to network with :)

Sales and Analytics

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I appreciated the opportunity to speak with senior leaders and hear from Mike Bloomberg on his life story that got him where he is today. I also liked the on site training they give you before throwing you into a problem or task. The training is very thorough and provides great insight on what is to come in the next point of the job.

What I wish was different

I wish the work was more challenging. In the pit of the program, I began to feel like I wasn't doing stimulating work and became bored with what I was doing. I hoped that with the feedback I gave about the program and the various projects I worked on that there will be adjustments for the next class.

Advice

Don't be afraid to speak out and provide constructive criticism. Challenge everything placed in front of you. I always asked why and didn't allow my position as an intern stop me from providing changes where the needed to be fit.

Data Analyst

June - August 2019 • Princeton, NJ

What I liked

I really enjoyed the culture at Bloomberg Global Data. Everyone was very welcoming and helpful throughout the summer. Additionally, I thought the intern program was well run. We were given multiple projects that were challenging yet stimulating. These projects introduced us to many people across the company and helped us build our network.

What I wish was different

It would have been nice to spend the summer in a city like New York or DC but it was still a great experience.

Advice

I would tell future interns to not be afraid to ask for help from anyone in the company. Everyone is willing to give their expertise for the intern projects and this is a great opportunity to build relationships with future colleagues.

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The company is located in the most interesting and diverse city in the US, and you have full access to everything you would want to do! There are many intern events that you can attend, although a lot of them happen before quarterly students make it to Bloomberg, so you may miss out on some events. The pay is really great for an internship, and the various stipends make living in New York for the summer relatively affordable; you will have quite a lot of money left over after expenses in order to do what you want in New York. The work is very team dependent, but I was on a really cool team that had interesting problems and cool projects that were being worked.

What I wish was different

The provided housing is not the best; it is dorm style with shared bathrooms and small kitchens. I instead opted for the equivalent housing stipend and found a better dorm to stay in (24th Street Residence, School of Visual Arts). The internship is, of course, very team dependent. Some people were not particularly keen on the team that they were on, but still enjoyed it nonetheless.

Advice

Get to know the recruiting team (including your interviewers!)! They are very nice and can help you navigate the internship process and keep you updated easily. Many of your interviewers will be Stanford alum or people who like Stanford, so getting to know them is really great.

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

My team was amazing and my project was an unconventional, cool intern project. Bloomberg's recruiting process felt more intimate than other companies its size (and larger), which I feel allowed me to land the opportunity I had. Maybe I was just lucky. The culture was laid-back (no need to work more than the required 40 hours, take snack breaks whenever, etc.) and the people were friendly.

What I wish was different

I only have minor gripes. Bloomberg lacks some of the benefits that larger tech companies have. For example, they provide soup at 12 PM, but that doesn't constitute a lunch, and you only get dinner if you're working late (until 8 PM).

Advice

The intern housing is quite bad, I would recommend taking the stipend and finding a roommate. I'm not a huge fan of 35 minute commutes, so I'd also try hard to find housing close to the office.

Operations Analyst Intern

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Great company culture; employees are very welcoming to interns, who receive meaningful work. Pantry is a nice plus as well!

What I wish was different

Advice

Consider working for a company that positively impacts society, whether that be a company with fantastic CSR initiatives or a non-profit organization. Working at Bloomberg was exciting because the company donates 85% of its profits to charity, so all the work employees do are going to great causes. Volunteering and philanthropy were also embedded in the company’s values.
