JOB TITLE: Children’s Center Student Teaching Assistant   

 
STATEMENT OF PURPOSEUnder the direction of the Children’s Center Director, the Associate Director, Program Assistant and the direct supervision of the Teacher and Teaching Assistant, the Student Teaching Assistant will be a member of the teaching team and will share in the development and implementation of a developmentally appropriate educational program promoting social, emotional, physical and cognitive growth and development of the children served in an inclusive and nurturing environment.  All members are trained in the importance of confidentiality.
 
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
  • Functions as a member of a teaching team; shares ideas and information with colleagues
  • Implements curriculum and lesson plans of Teacher and Teaching Assistant. If no plans are in place, engage children in appropriate activities using classroom materials
  • Assists in providing opportunities for children to experiment and learn in a warm, safe, nurturing environment
  • Assists in maintaining classroom and playgrounds in a neat, clean, safe, attractive manner; examines environment for any potential hazards; maintains proper condition of materials and equipment in classroom; maintains inventories of materials and complete materials requests
  • Contributes to the maintenance of charts, checklists, anecdotal records on children which will be used in the development of plans to meet the children’s individual and collective needs
  • Models appropriate professional behavior and interactions with children, family and other community members. Develops and maintains good working relationships with families, i.e. introduce yourself, say hello
  • Finds out which children have allergies, or might be taking medication
  • Notifies teacher, teacher assistant, directors or office staff if parent expresses a concern or dissatisfaction, or if a child is sick, missing or injured
  • Assists in the provision of physical care for children; helps to prepare meals, feed children, wash hands and faces, changes diapers and assists in toileting when appropriate
  • Identifies for the teacher any child whose behavior and physical condition appears to be different than usual
  • Must be physically able to lift, move or position children if needed
  • Must be willing and able to go outdoors with children in a range of weather conditions
  • Supports office team with general tasks which could include copying, filing, data entry, computer skills, and assisting administration
  • Dresses appropriately for work that is sometimes messy and requires moving up and down from the floor
  • Depending on the hours of the person you are covering, your starting and ending time might change
  • Completes all required professional development and training
  • Performs other duties as assigned
