Public Programming and Events Internship

Public Programming Co-Op/Internship


Throughout the course of a semester, the University Galleries presents public programming in conjunction with the current exhibition. Past events and programs include: opening receptions, artist conversations, public forums, craft workshops, panel discussions, curatorial tours, director’s tours, open mics, children’s programs, and more. The University Galleries collaborates with various schools and departments across campus and local organizations to create programs that serve and are relevant to the community.

Interns will assist in the preparation of events, including day-of set-up and clean-up; create content and promotional materials; brainstorm creative ways to increase attendance, visibility, and interest across campus; and more. Interns will have the opportunity to propose and coordinate an event over the course of the semester. Interns will survey the campus community, maintaining spreadsheets and other records of contacts, events, to determine and propose co-sponsorship possibilities and collaborations with departments and organizations across campus. This internship is for students looking to further their professional experience; interns will be responsible for communications with other departments, faculty, and organizations within the campus and external community partners.

This is an unpaid internship for course credit for the fall 2022 semester. Interns will work 12-15 hours per week. Availability outside normal working hours, including evenings, is required. Attendance to all public programs and events is expected. All majors, disciplines and studies are encouraged to apply. Prior experience in a gallery or museum setting is not necessary.

All staff members of the University Galleries are responsible for the safety and security of the artwork. Visitors and attendees to events are not permitted to touch the artwork and must stand at a reasonable distance. Galleries staff is responsible for communicating and enforcing the rules of the department.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the planning and preparation of programs and events
  • Assist in the promotion and marketing of programs and events
  • Propose, plan, and coordinate a student-run event in conjunction with the exhibition
  • Collaborate with other departments and student organizations across campus
  • Track attendance at programs and events
  • Welcome and guide attendees and answer questions in a friendly, positive manner
  • Communicate and enforce University Galleries policies to visitors (including Facilities)
  • Maintain the safety and security of the artwork
  • Assist in ticketing, registering, and checking in attendees to public programs and events
  • Encourage donations and attendance to public programs
  • Assist with other tasks and support other departments as needed

Qualifications:
  • Availability outside normal working hours, including evenings
  • Ability to work during the weekends
  • Ability to work all public programs and events
  • Prior customer service experience
  • Strong communication skills; public speaking
  • Comfortable working with a diverse audience
  • Ability to resolve visitor issues independently and in a professional manner
  • Computer and technology skills; familiarity with Eventbrite, Google Suite, Asana
